Who Leaked Fannie/Freddie Info? Rep. Waxman on the Hunt

Representative Henry Waxman (D.-Calif.) wants to know who in the White House "leaked" Fannie/Freddie info before the big "Bailout" announcement on July 13.

The Chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform
committee has launched aggressive investigations into issues ranging from the leak that led to disclosure of Valerie Plame's identity to the development of U.S. policy on greenhouse-gas emissions.

Waxman wants to know if the Mortgage Giants knew of "...any actual or rumored disclosure or communication by a White House official to investors, the media, or board members of a plan to nationalize, place in conservatorship, or assume control of Freddie Mac."

In a letter dated Aug. 1, Waxman told Freddie Mac Chief Executive Richard F. Syron and Fannie Mae Chair Daniel H. Mudd that he was "evaluating" whether to "open an investigation into the circumstances that precipitated the recent distress in the shares prices of Freddie Mac."

The Washington Post obtained a copy of the letter.
